POKA JOT (production company)

We came up with this name for our production company as we felt it was quirky and clever. In fact the original name was POLKA JOTT but as we never wrote down the word, other members of the group started doing their bits of editing and before we knew it there were different spellings and interpretations. Originally I felt that Polka dots were a cool design and never really go out of fashion. Therefore it seemed a smart idea to relate that to our production company, a sense of being up to date and fun. The word JOTT quite simply represents each of our names, Jack, Ollie, Tom & Tim.

Questionnaire
We created the questionnaire after having had a group discussion and asking friends what genre of film they enjoy watching. The people asked were in the age range of 15-18 and the results showed that Thriller was the most popular. We established who our target audience was and then decided to make a film classed as a 15 certificate. The reason we questionned people before creating the questinnaire was because we wanted to make the questionnaire specific to what we wanted to know in order to create a production that we know has a guaranteed audience. This was possibly one of the most helpful responses we got back, from a 17 year old girl. Interestingly when we verbally questionned people on the spot on whether they would prefer a male or female pratogonist, 9 out of the 15 said female. As only 6 girls were questionned we were surprised with this result, however we stuck to what we felt was most suitable for the role of the character, which was a male. I believe that the feedback really helped us a great deal and collectively we did a great job grabbing ideas and putting others aside.
The elements we adopted in our final piece were scary music, Unexpected scenes, Gore, Mystery and Death. These elements were mixed into our opening scene to achieve the expectations of a thriller as well as making the audience scared or mystified. On the other hand we also made sure not to

Wednesday
The Shining
This is a clip of the opening scene from the movie 'The Shining'. It is an important clip to us because it inspired our own opening to 'Perfidious'. It is an extremely powerful opening as it encourages many different ideas and questions to arise. One of the most popular comments on youtube under this clip is 'This Opening is a master piece!!'. Evidently the audience find the scene to be mysterious and isolated as numerous comments stated 'these winding roads are arleady playing with my mind'. This is the exact response we would like to get from our audience.
Shooting Schedule
We are planning on shooting during the evening. The shots will be taken in order of the way they are shown in the story board that I will upload shortly. The reason we have chosen the evening is to avoid any lighting difficulties we experience during our preliminary task. Furthermore we hope to achieve a gloomy, mysterious and isolated effect which will probably be easier to achieve with lower lighting. Also if we manage to film in just an evening, we avoid the possibility of weather changes which may hamper the continuity of our clip.
We
still haven’t got all the necessary props. All that will be needed is a car, a
person to play as the man (Jack), a person to play as the girl, a pillow case
to put over the girls head, a garage and a replica handgun. More information
and concise detail will be displayed in the Location shots.
Thriller Questionnaire
After having collected in all of the Questionnaires it was time for a serious group discussion. It was clear that thrillers were enjoyed by everyone questionned, thus we are determined to include the popular answers in our production such as having 'scary music'in our opening scene. I will post an example of the Questionnaire given out soon.

One of our inspirations
Our movie genre is a thriller and is inspired by the once no.1 Box office Disturbia. The plot is
about a boy at college who is under house arrest and is spying on his
neighbours and starts seeing strange events taking place in his neighbourhood. Time then shows that the neighbour may be related with many missing women in his area.
Here is the trailer for Disturbia so you can have an idea of what to expect.

Story Plot
The plot is that there are a series of reports of
missing school girls in an area in England, which is quickly introduced to the
audience by the use of non-diegetic sound from the car radio. The opening scene consists of a car going up a hill with trees on
either side which emphasizes the mystery and isolation of the character driving.
We have related it to the ‘Shining’ which has a similar opening scene. A hooded man will then turn on the radio to
hear a report on the continuing search for a missing school girl whose
disappearance is thought to be linked to previous kidnappings of school girls
whose dead bodies were all found in abandoned garages around the county. The shadowy
hooded man will be shown pulling his car into a well hidden garage. The
following scene reveals a girl tied up in the boot of his car with a pillow
case over her head. She will be panicking and reluctant to co-operate but is
surprisingly quiet. We then see the hooded man slowly walk back towards his car
to reach, at which we get a clear view of his figure with a mid-shot. Then an
important moment is emphasized with a close up shot of him reaching for a hand
gun in his car door. The hooded man then without seconds pause walks up to the
girl and shoots her head.
Target Audience
The audience that we are looking to
make a movie for are between the ages of 15 years and 25 years. The gender is a
thriller and will follow the traditional conventions of a thriller/horror
including mystery, death and thrill. The movie has characters that are within
the age group of the target audience.
The victim (teenage girl) would be
considered as a young adult, I believe it is important for the audience to be
able to relate to the characters to make the experience scarier. The movie
genre is a thriller and is inspired by a movie called Disturbia which is about
a boy at college who is under house arrest and is spying on his neighbours.
Time then shows that the neighbour may be related with the missing’s of many
young women in the area. Disturbia has a BBFC rating of 15 and targets the
teenage and young adult audiences.
Why 'Perfidious'?
We wanted to find a title that would create anticipation, excitement, enthusiasm and most importantly mystery. Consequently at this point we as a group decided that a title consisting of only one word would be best, as it would attract media attention and get people curious. At this point a word, I rarely use came to mind, Perfidious! There are many reasons why this word felt so appropriate, firstly it is quite catchy and memorable for it is not a common word used daily. Secondly the word has many connotations which could get people talking, thus possibly creating a buzz online with debates resulting in publicity. Most importantly the definition of perfidious 'guilty, treacherous, faithless or deceitful' relates perfectly with the genre and storyline of our project.
